Interview Transcript
Pamela: Hi My name is Pamela and welcome to Lawyer of the Week. This week I’m pleased to introduce you to Anand.
Anand is from Mumbai, India. I am giving little bit about his practice. He has been practicing more than 31 years and he is currently with A V Legal Associates, Mumbai that has offices all over India. He has more than 400 properties sold and notices have been issued on the basis recovery has been effected. He has approved more than 600 projects as well as for home loans. He is an expert in recovery, Indian Real estate with sale or reconstruction of assets. Anand has experience in legal due diligence for accruing assets, real-estate laws and investments. With out further delay let me introduce you to Anand. Anand please tell us name.
Anand: Thank you. My name is Anand
Pamela: I am so happy that you’re our Lawyer of the Week.
I’d like to ask you our Lawyer of the Week questions. The first question is when and what made you decide to become a lawyer?
Anand: Well. I have done my Bachelors in Mathematics degree. My last semester mark sheet was some how misplaced by the university.
I made requests, remainders and letters but there was no response. Ultimately I told them I would sue the university before the court of law. They replied that you couldn’t even turn a single stone of the university. This answer made me to become a lawyer instead of a mathematician.
Pamela: (laughing) So you wanted to study mathematics and they sent you to become a lawyer, is it so?
Anand: Yeah, I decided to study law even though I was good at mathematics.
Pamela: So even though you are a lawyer and you wanted to do mathematics you are actually doing both.
Anand: Yes, all the mathematical skills and the analytical skills helps me the legal practice.
Pamela: That’s great. Now tell us what are your biggest wins in your career.
Anand: Actually we are doing all Real Estate Projects in India. I’m also Chairman of Indian National Bar Association in which we are helping the downtrodden people who are not able to access the justice and this is our priority in addition to my regular practice.
My expertise is in banking, Finance and Real Estate laws and practice in such areas.
Pamela: Excellent. I just want to make sure everyone understands, that you have been bringing justice to people who might not have access to it.
Anand: Yes the people who are unable to pay, we have a team of lawyers who are helping those people.
Pamela: Excellent, it is very very admirable Anand, because your are able to help people receive justice and you help them to navigate the judicial system that is a really great boon for your legal practice.
Can you tell us some of the difficulties challenges that you had in your legal practices?
Anand: I am a first generation lawyer, so in the beginning of my legal practice, it was very difficult to sustain in the legal field, as the legal fields are full of family run offices. And faced difficulty in establishing the practice. In the initial days it is difficult to get a case and even contest a case.
Pamela: Do you want to say it is difficult to get a case?
Anand: Not only getting a case and even it difficult to approach for cases, as we are first generation lawyer. It was difficult in those times of 1980s. Now it is easy and liberalized.
Pamela: Do you tell us how many languages you speak?
Anand: I can speak four languages, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and English. Tamil is my mother tongue and Hindi is our National language and two more languages English and Malayalam, I am able to speak.
Pamela: You can speak four languages it excellent. In America most of the lawyers speak one language only and you are able to speak more languages and communicate to the people in various languages. I congratulate to you.
Anand: Thanks.
Pamela: What kind of clients, are you looking for and people comes to you, what kind of clients you are preferred.
Anand: I am looking for big corporates like Banks, Financial Institutions, Government banks and private sector banks, big corporates are preferred clients and we are also serving individual clients to some extent.
Pamela: What we understand that the big corporates, banks and real estate clients and lastly what you said?
Anand: Individuals, who has grievances and we will take up the issue for judicial redresses.
Pamela: How many clients in your 31 years of experiences, do you guess?
Anand: A thousand clients
Pamela: You have more than 1000 clients
Anand: Yes, thousand clients
Pamela: Very Good, what is the important thing you have done to those thousand clients?
Anand: The transparent approach to the clients stating that what is legal, what is not correct and there is no short cuts. I will explain the clients what is legally correct and legally viable and this transparency in my dealing with clients help me those clients coming to me repeatedly with their legal issues. I will try to solve those issues.
Pamela: Very nice. You are educating the people what is correct and what is legal and how can it be solved.
Excellent, you are representing the clients after explain the clients what is correct and legal. You want lots of patients.
You have dealt with thousands of clients across four languages, which is outstanding.
I am very proud of you and I hats off you as your 31 years of practice and handled more than thousands of people and solving their problems, Anand. Some people do not have Anand to solve their problems.
How do you control your stress to the day-to-day pressure?
Anand: I do yoga and Meditation as tool to de-stress daily pressures. You know Mumbai is crowed city and going to office and coming back home in the crowd. It takes three hours a day. I have do yoga in the Morning or the late night daily.
Pamela: Excellent, many years ago in Honk Hong, US, UK no one know what is yoga, now every one know yoga. I do meditate for the past ten years. Yoga is from India and so many lawyer introduced yoga to handle the stress.
Anand: Yes, yoga originated form India and now has been recognized by UN and yoga international day being celebrated world vide.
Yoga and meditation needs to practice to handle the stress. Yoga is nothing to do with religion and its is exercise and God is one and we named differently and every one should do yoga for their good health.
Pamela: Yes, now the people are aware and do yoga for look younger and better. They do yoga to handle the pressure.
I thank you for the lawyer of the week and there has been torrential rain over there at Mumbai and lots of evacuation and more traffic and returning home is difficult and I am thankful for taking time to be the lawyer of the week.
