I Made A Mistake
I made a mistake the other day. The mistake was a costly one for me. I began to search diligently outside of myself for peace. I have strong beliefs about peace. You see, I believe that without inner peace, peace of mind, you have nothing.
I have learned that when we live each day angry, in turmoil and frustration, it renders us useless to ourselves, our spouses, our children, our clients and our careers.
Fighter for Peace
I am a fighter for peace within. Most people would describe me not as a fighter but as a peacemaker. Walking around each day embroiled in high stress, anger, rage, frustration and depression can be a killer. I have watched many family members and dear friends die before their time because they were too busy to find the peace within.
I learned the importance of peace as a child. There was so much chaos and violence in my home; it almost broke my spirit. As a little girl, many times I had to break up fights between my parents or my younger brothers. As a nine-year-old girl, it took a lot of my physical and emotional energy. I guess that is why I am an excellent peacemaker.
Today, I work mostly with lawyers and law firms. When I collaborate with these attorneys and their firms, miraculously communication becomes fine-tuned, relationships at the office flourish and lawyers, law firms, and staff become more productive making more money. Peace is a primary ingredient to increase profits. Lawyers take these very same tools home, and their family life becomes an oasis.
Lawyers Lack of Peace
Every lawyer seeks success. Yet, because of the lack of inner peace, lawyers have taken a top spot in the nation regarding employee dissatisfaction, attorneys continue to defect to other careers. Lawyers are in the top ranking for alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, and divorce. Dissatisfaction has become common place in a law firm.
While financial success is important, attorneys desire a satisfying family life, good and health. Enjoyment is also high on the list.
Of course, each individual must define success in their own unique way. Some lawyers have lost their passion, their health, and their love lives. They may dread waking up each morning to the same pressures and deadlines.
“I often wonder after all of these years, what am I striving for. It never ends,” said Lester, a long-time attorney. “The battles never end.” Every lawyer, judge or law student faces competition, constant stress, and high expectations that indeed never end. Many times the most difficult trials occur outside of the court.
It is a slippery slope because unmanaged stress leads to problems. Depression, substance abuse, health issues, divorce and strife in personal and family lives are symptoms of the prolonged condition I call the “Lawyers Dilemma.”
POLARIZATION TODAY IN THE USA
I am currently in Jacksonville, Florida, a southern city where the political divide is 50/50. That means that statistically 50% voted for the current president and 50% did not. The city has not had peace now stretching out for years.
Sides slamming disparaging words trying to shame each other continues within marriages, family relationships, in the workforce, and in the community. I have never seen such divisiveness.
Racial divisiveness is flourishing with extremists shouting, “We’ve had enough of police killing our children!”
Marches and protests are ramping up while law enforcement is preparing for the unrest. When I looked outside myself for peace, I found myself back in the nine-year-old mentality trying to figure what I could do to restore order. I was given much advice. The advice I received was not right or/ wrong, but the undertone was fear.
My Search For Peace
Inner Peace
That day when I looked outside for peace, it was as if I had amnesia. For a day, I lost my peace within and all my mind’s eye could see was conflict, struggle, and hopelessness.
The truth is that in the USA and all over the world people must stand up and in many cases fight for their beliefs. But, without the peace within the personal wreckage can be a travesty.
