For many lawyers, it is hard if you are depressed because of the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Lawyers Depression: Many still believe that depression is somehow ‘shameful.’ Being ashamed only leads to attorneys/solicitors trying to hide it for fear of being judged.
Hiding depression does not make it go away. This results in:
- Unnecessary shame or embarrassment
- Failure to share the problem with others.
- Refusing even to accept that they have a problem.
- Feeling too uncomfortable to talk to anyone about it.
- They do not go for help.
Lawyers can have high-functioning depression and many struggle to get the right help because their illness may not seem to impinge on their daily lives.
It gets worse over time. It is like walking around with a low-grade fever. A lawyers family usually bears the brunt of the depression.
The ABA, the Task Force for Lawyer Well-Being and other organizations associated with the ABA have admitted that this is a problem and that as many as one in four lawyers suffer.
You can stop hiding this problem of lawyers depression and get into the solution.
I was privileged to be a peer reviewer for the report by the National Task Force On Lawyer Well-Being,
Creating a Movement to Improve Well-Being in the Legal Profession.
